Alka Pool Construction
Since 1961, Alka Pool Construction has been making backyard dreams come true as one of western Canada’s premier pool builders. The family-owned and -operated company has more than 50 years of experience in high-quality waterscapes, whirlpools and water features. With a newly rebranded image and website, Alka Pool is carrying on a tradition of excellence.
“The bulk of our work is high-end residential, but we also do some semi-commercial projects, including hotels or apartment high-rise pool construction,” says Carla Sovernigo, second generation president and co-owner of Alka Pool.
A family foundation
Carla carries on the next generation of leadership at Alka as the cofounder’s daughter. Alka started with three brothers – Larry, Amedeo and Graziano Sovernigo – who came to Canada to create a brighter future. The brothers founded Alka Pool in 1961, building houses and pools in Vancouver’s Lower Mainland area and finally settling into the niche of swimming pool expertise.
When Graziano moved on to pursue other options, Larry and Amedeo assumed ownership of Alka Pool in 1971, steadily building the company’s reputation through quality craftsmanship, technical innovation, unparalleled customer service and an active role in the local community.
As Alka Pool progressed, the team began to tackle more challenging projects, including high-end cantilevered pools. Larry’s engineering background allowed Alka Pool to excel in specialized poolscapes and cliff-hanger pools that have become the company’s hallmark.
With more high-profile properties and buyers in the Vancouver market, Alka Pool’s business soared through the 1980s and the opportunity for high-end pools with automated options and multiple attached water features began to take the business to the next level.
Carla and her cousin, Rafaelle, purchased the business from their fathers in 2008. Although both semi-retired, Larry and Amedeo continue to be involved with the company. As Carla puts it, “They’re still invested in Alka’s success because its family,” she says. “We get their wisdom and they get to contribute whenever they want to their longtime passion of poolscapes, so its win-win.”
As a member of the Master Pools Guild since 1978, Alka Pool ranks among the world’s top pool builders. The company specializes in custom pool design and construction, offering services from private residential pools with stylish details to a larger lap-style pool for residential towers, hotels and resorts.
No matter the size and scope of the project, each design is a custom-fit solution. “We custom tailor a pool for the client, right down to an assortment of pool finishing materials and plumbing and filtration systems,” says Carla.
Alka Pool also builds spas and water features that are often integrated into the pool’s design. The spas are also custom-designed in various shapes and sizes. In addition, the company’s water features include natural-looking rock as well as classic and modern waterfalls. Alka Pool even custom designs spa seats to ensure water heights and jet locations in order to deliver maximum relaxation and enjoyment.
The company’s clientele includes a long list of private, well-established executives, many of which often request multiple bodies of water. “Projects with a backyard pool, whirlpool and multiple water features are very common for us,” says Carla. Alka Pool’s customers can also select from a range of luxurious finishes, including all glass tiled pools or Alka River Rock finish.
“Infinity edge pools are still really big,” says Carla. “Another feature that we’ve noticed rise in popularity is the Baja shelf. Spillover whirlpools and additional water features are more and more common with clients as the backyard has evolved into an extension of the home and serves as the outdoor entertainment room.”
A project known as Pool Party Central, completed in 2013 by Alka Pool, showcases multiple features, including a freeform infinity edge pool, spa and specialty colored plaster. From the barstools to the fully functional kitchen at the pool’s edge, this design is everything needed for the ultimate backyard party spot.
The vibrant onyx and midnight blue colored quartz plaster, set against a luscious, green landscape makes this pool pop. Both the whirlpool and the stunning infinity edge are tiled in iridescent blue mosaic Byzantine glass tile, which highlights the unique shape of the surface and water freely flowing from the raised whirlpool into the pool. The pool-spa combination also includes LED color-changing lights.
Swimming on the rocks
One of Alka Pool’s widely acclaimed projects dubbed “Swimming on the Rocks” includes nearly all facets of the company’s extensive knowledge and expertise. The auto cover, Baja shelf meets infinity pool including an all tiled whirlpool. The lap-style pool juts directly out from a rock ledge, giving the sense that one is actually swimming over a cascade of rock with a breathtaking view of the Whistler Mountains at every angle.
Black glass tile throughout the infinity pool and whirlpool give the water a mountain lake reflective look, while the geometric design matches the modern home. “This system also includes a UV, ozone and chlorinator sanitation system, as well as the turbo clean system, to enhance the user’s enjoyment and ease of maintenance,” notes Carla.
“This is one of our most noteworthy projects,” she continues. Swimming on the Rocks has received a number of awards and recognitions, including: 2015 International Pool of the Year by Ocean Home Magazine; 2014 Grand International Award from the Master Pools Guild; 2014 Gold Award for Residential Concrete Pool with Vanishing Edge from the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals; the 2014 Gold Award for Technical Achievement from the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada; and the 2014 Silver Award for a Residential Spa from the Master Pools Guild.
A busy backlog
With so many attractive, award-winning designs under its belt, it’s no surprise that Alka Pool is extremely busy. “Right now, we’re booked throughout the summer months in advance,” reveals Carla. “We try to encourage potential customers to get all the planning, contracts and permits done well ahead of the main construction season to avoid unnecessary delays.”
Alka Pool has also recently rebranded, launching a new website and building its social media presence to inform and accommodate a broad, growing customer base. By focusing on quality workmanship, attention to details, superior designs and use of the latest equipment and materials, Alka Pool Construction is stronger than ever and continues a 50-year history as western Canada’s premier pool contractor.
