Brouwer Construction (1981) Ltd.: Experts in Energy-efficient, Cost-effective Structures
Brouwer Construction (1981) Ltd. (Brouwer) is a family-owned and -operated construction firm located in St. Catharines, Ontario, which has been applying its foundational principles of fairness, honesty, integrity and respect to its work since 1959. Incorporated in 1981, Brouwer has constructed seniors’ residences, churches, long-term care facilities, private and public schools, multistorey residences and a variety of agricultural, commercial and industrial structures.
Senior Living in Welland
Brouwer is currently at work on a four-storey seniors’ residence in Welland, Ontario, being constructed for the Regional Municipality of Niagara. Brouwer’s construction schedule for this project began in October 2012 with an expected completion date of October 2013. One of Brouwer’s primary focuses with this project is on energy efficiency and sustainability. The seniors’ residence is being built to LEED standards and is on track for LEED Silver certification. Among the structure’s features is ground-source heating to boost energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. The building’s skylights are also being outfitted with blinds to keep down the need for cooling.
Skilled subcontractors are performing all trade work for the project. Because the seniors’ residence is a public project being built for the housing authority, each subcontractor, including those performing mechanical, electrical, masonry and steel work, had to be prequalified. Henry Heikoop, Brouwer’s project manager for the residence, notes, “We were working with a limited field, people the owner knows and who are trustworthy, and that helps a lot. There’s no one on our team that we haven’t worked with before.”
A Legacy of High Standards
With regard to the company’s construction process, Heikoop remarks, “Brouwer is a family company, and we have very, very high standards that we expect from our people and that we try to hold them to. We are known in the industry as being a trustworthy company that does what we say and says what we do.”
Brouwer comes to the seniors’ residence project in Welland with relevant experience and expertise, having constructed many multiresident structures in its most recent decades of activity, including the $12 million Evergreen Terrace in Grimsby, Ontario, a 99-unit, 160,000-square foot seniors’ apartment building in 2003. The company has also built the Royal Henley, a retirement home in St. Catharines. In addition, Brouwer was responsible for construction of Albright Manor, a five-storey long-term care facility in Beamsville, Ontario. This 2,900-square metre, $21 million facility was completed with a 231-bed capacity in 16 months in 2001.
Additional completed projects include an arena and multiuse field house for Ridley College in St. Catharines and a wine education center – an educational building with a working winery and retail store – at the Glendale campus of Niagara College in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Brouwer has also constructed St. Michael’s Catholic High School in Niagara Falls, Ontario; an addition to Virgil Centennial Arena in Virgil, Ontario; Immanuel Orthodox Reformed Church in Jordan, Ontario; and Heidelberg Village, a 99-unit, four-storey apartment building in St. Catharines that included the completion of a holistic healthcare centre.
A Variety of Construction Services/
Brouwer offers general contracting, construction/project management, pre-engineered building and design-build services. The company has provided its construction and project management skills to many private-sector nonprofit organizations, such as churches and private schools. Company management has found that its construction and project management approach offers greater flexibility on a daily basis for all shareholders in a project, while still ensuring the same cost benefits that are typically achieved through tendered, price-stipulated contracts.
Brouwer has also worked in association with Nucor Building Systems to provide time-sensitive and cost-effective solutions to clients’ needs. Brouwer has been able through this partnership to address the need for clear-span structures among its commercial, agricultural and warehousing clientele, among others.
The company has also performed in a design-build capacity for a number of clients, working with them from the concept stage through design, construction and completion. Brouwer teams with its clients to determine budgets, provide critical cost analysis, evaluate proposed building systems and propose alternate, more efficient system designs.
By adhering to its stated core goals of fairness, honesty, integrity and respect, Brouwer has consistently been able to provide high-quality finished structures on time and within budget while meeting its clients’ complete satisfaction. By applying its skills in a wide variety of settings to a wide variety of construction projects, Brouwer Construction (1981) Ltd.’s name has become synonymous with promises kept and consistent quality, and that legacy will continue with the firm’s completion of the seniors’ residence in Welland and beyond.
