Northern Dock Systems
Kirby Moore recognized the marketplace’s need for an innovative service, supply and installation business focused on providing exceptional customer service; therefore, he founded Northern Dock Systems (NDS) in 2001. Today the team at NDS offers service, consultation, sales and installation solutions across a broad product range, which includes loading docks, overhead doors, seals and shelters, as well as related equipment. Additionally, NDS is the exclusive Canadian dealer of Big Ass Fans, a product line of specially engineered HVLS (High Volume Low Speed) energy-efficient fans.
As a result of NDS’ focus on customer service and its reputation for providing innovative and cost-effective products and services, the company has fostered sustainable relationships over the past decade with commercial and industrial businesses alike at all points in the supply chain and across a variety of industry sectors.
“We currently have about 35 employees serving our customers from our head office location in Mississauga, Ontario, as well as our national account, construction and regional sales office in Cambridge, Ontario,” Moore says. “We recognize the value-added and cost/benefit considerations of our customers and meet these needs with innovative, energy-efficient, technologically advanced solutions.”
Moore and his team offer a rewarding customer experience; this is a result of the company’s core values, honesty and integrity, as well as its desire to establish and grow long-term relationships with both customers and suppliers. The team at NDS works closely with clients and develops comprehensive customized plans to improve the safety and efficiency of loading dock and overhead door systems at a customer’s facilities.
Several organizations have recognized and praised the company for its positive reputation and steady growth. Most recently, Profit Magazine ranked NDS at No. 109 out of the 500 fastest growing companies in Canada.
Big Ass Business
In addition to the loading dock and overhead door service, sales and installation offerings, NDS is Canada’s exclusive dealer for Big Ass Fans, which have diameters ranging from five to 24 feet. According to Moore, a variety of Big Ass Fans’ designs have been manufactured in order to provide optimal air movement across a broad range of applications and positioning, fixed or portable, requirements. Big Ass Fans are specialty products, designed to manage the ambient temperature of an area, heating or cooling, in a manner that results in energy cost savings for the customer.
With regard to loading dock systems, NDS offers a line of both manual and powered adjustable dock levelers to facilitate the safe loading and unloading of products and materials. The company has air-powered, hydraulic and mechanical lift options with features such as flexible lip levelers, telescoping dock lips and barriers. “Industrial doors in a wide variety of size, material and functional purpose options help keep facilities clean, dry and safe,” Moore explains. “Wheel chocks, seals and shelters, as well as trailer restraints are only a few of the other products that round out the full solution capability of NDS.”
Loading Up On Business
As noted most recently by Profit Magazine, NDS continues to expand both its penetration and reach within the industry. “We do about 60 percent of our business in Ontario,” says Moore. “The rest is spread across the country, certainly in other major centres such as Montreal, Quebec City, Calgary and Vancouver, but having the service business of several chain store operations means we are basically anywhere and everywhere.”
According to Moore the company continues steady growth. “We have grown steadily each year and enjoyed significant gains during the downturn, which I believe is a result of the consistent application of our core values in all we do,” Moore continues. “More recently, we have executed an internally focused program, adding bench strength, an additional executive leadership resource and building our infrastructure in a purposeful way to support the growth we will realize in the near term.”
Moore is proud of how far the company has come, and more so of his team. “We have exceptional people and we operate with a team concept and an entrepreneurial spirit,” he continues. “We employ good people with drive; we know they are what puts us a cut above. We lead the market by putting our customers first, by educating the industry about loading dock technology and industrial efficiency and by keeping our eyes on new products and markets. We take a lot of inspiration from German engineering.”
Moore and the NDS team focus on client relationships and innovative technology in order to continue to move the business forward; the company’s relationships with suppliers allow NDS to offer unique products and services, as well.
Additionally, NDS services all of the equipment it sells. The company’s technicians are some of the most experienced in the business and work within a strong coordinated network of internal dispatchers and external suppliers and manufacturers. According to Moore, this results in exceptionally efficient and effective customer service levels. NDS utilizes this network to build lasting partnerships with clients who have come to rely on the team for the lifetime of a product.
Over the years NDS has built a reputation of providing exceptional customer service and quality products. Moore’s passion and capable leadership continue to set an example for the competition, prioritizing customer experience and innovation. Moore acknowledges that a business must evolve in order to grow. Keeping its eye on service excellence and embracing emerging green products, Northern Dock Systems will continue to offer diverse products and services to a growing number of satisfied commercial and industrial clients.
